TrafficGuard is not compatible with Google Ads Smart Mode (previously known as Google Ads Express).
Smart Mode is a simplified version of Google Ads designed for beginners. It does not support tracking templates or IP exclusions — both of which TrafficGuard requires to detect and prevent invalid traffic. To use TrafficGuard, your Google Ads account must be in Expert Mode.
What is Expert Mode?
Expert Mode is the full Google Ads experience. It unlocks all campaign types, tracking template configuration, and IP exclusion management — giving TrafficGuard the access it needs to monitor your clicks and block invalid traffic in real-time.
Not sure which mode you're in?
If you can see the full left-hand navigation in Google Ads — including Campaigns, Ad groups, Keywords, Audiences, and Settings — you are already in Expert Mode and no action is needed.
If your interface shows only simplified options with limited settings, you are in Smart Mode. Learn more here.
ℹ️ How to check your account mode
In your Google Ads account, click the Tools & Settings icon in the top right. If you see the option Switch to Expert Mode, your account is currently in Smart Mode and will need to be switched before connecting to TrafficGuard.
How to switch from Smart Mode to Expert Mode
Sign in to your Google Ads account.
Click the Tools & Settings icon in the top right corner.
Select Switch to Expert Mode.
Once switched, your account will have access to the full Google Ads experience, including tracking templates, IP exclusions, and all standard campaign types. This change is permanent and cannot be undone.
⚠️Note: Switching from Smart Mode to Expert Mode is a one-way change.
You cannot revert to Smart Mode once switched. Your existing Smart Campaigns will remain active, but you will also be able to create standard Search, Display, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns.
💡 Tip
Please note that Google only allows for IP exclusions on specific campaign types. You can learn more here.
